I have that 6th of January, post Christmas feeling. I am looking forward to packing up the dressing up box and Halloween decorations and getting my sitting room back. It has been great fun but definitely time to wrap up another great chapter in parenthood. Our sitting room has been a dressing room for weeks now.
As new parents we started off with the cute, innocent, Tesco baby outfits of a pumpkin and a witch but over the years we have progressed to frightening zombies and gangsters. Our dressing up box has grown into two large boxes and our house is covered in cobwebs.
Halloween is one of my favourite times of the year. It is not about money or who gets the most Easter Eggs or who gets what from Santa. Halloween is about excitement and creativity and squeals and giggles and screeches of fear and excitement. It is all about fun.
The planning and discussions this year began in September. The dressing up boxes and decorations came down from the attic earlier than before. This year it was the friends that contributed to the discussions and the friends that helped piece the outfits together while also rummaging for their own. There was scurrying between the houses as rifles were sourced and bridal head pieces borrowed.
From a parent who dresses up every year watching this display day in day out in the run up to Halloween amused me no end.
The kids are always growing up but at Halloween it is a different stage in their growth. They seem to become more confident. Brave. Whether they want to be a footballer with no make up but all the props, or a zombie bride in full fancy dress, these little people become their own persons. Albeit in disguise.
It was another great Halloween.
Roll on next year for more spooks and madness.
